02 Mar What Temperature Should You Serve Wine?
While you may store your bottles on the counter or a wine rack in your home, not all wines are best served at room temperature. You can and should refrigerate most of your wines an appropriate amount of time before serving them. Keep reading to find out what temperature all your favorite wines should be served at to get the best experience out of them.
Sparkling wine should be ice cold. Champagne, Cava, and Prosecco for example should be chilled to 38-50 degrees Fahrenheit. Put the bottle in the freezer an hour before you open it. The more high-end the wine, the warmer it can be.
White wines should be served at a normal refrigerator temperature, around 44-57 degrees Fahrenheit. An example would be wine such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Chardonnay. The lighter and zestier the wine is, the colder it can be. Oaked white wines are better warmer, however.
Light red wines should be served cool. This means around 53-63 degrees Fahrenheit. The fruitier the wine is, the warmer it can be. Put the bottle in the fridge 30 minutes before opening it. These wines would include Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Burgundy, for example.
Rich red wines should be served slightly cool at around 63-69 degrees Fahrenheit. These would include Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauv, and Merlot, for example. High tannin wines smooth out some at warmer temperatures and it is easier to warm your glass rather than cool it.
Another thing to keep in mind is if your wine is burning your nose with the smell of alcohol, it may be too warm. However, if the wine seems bland and without flavor, you may need to try warming it up. This is common with red wines if stored in the fridge long-term. Lower quality wines also do better served cold as it mutes any possible flaws in the aroma.
Keep these tips in mind but experiment on your own with your favorite wines. Facts are facts, but your personal preferences are what matter the most. So, if you typically leave your wine on the counter, try chilling it, and if you typically refrigerate your wine for storage, consider chilling to a lesser degree and only before drinking. See what works best for you.
