02 Apr Questions to Ask When Buying Wine
Have you ever been to the store and someone has asked if they can help you find a bottle of wine and you didn’t know what to say? Maybe you don’t know what you like, or maybe you just don’t know how to convey the information. Well, today we will talk a bit about questions that can help your salesperson help you.
The most basic question of all is red or white wine. Consider what you might be eating to pair it with and ask if you aren’t sure which would be better. If you need a red wine to pair with a meal but you usually prefer white wine, let them know this as well. This will help them select a wine for you with characteristics you will enjoy.
Ask what pairs well with your meal. While it may be technically possible to drink any wine with any food, certain pairings are not suitable and will not showcase the food or wine at its best. Ask the salesperson what they would recommend with certain dishes and try to give as much detail as possible about the cooking of the meats, spices used, and so on.
Ask when the bottle should be opened. Some wines are meant to age and others are meant to be consumed young. Not every wine improves with age and lower-priced bottles are typically meant to be drunk immediately. If you are looking for a wine to be consumed the same day make sure you let them know so they can point you in the right direction.
What is the wine similar to? If you can reference some styles of wine or producers you know you like this can help the salesperson point you in the right direction.
Let them know what price you want to pay. A lot of times people don’t like to answer this question because they believe they will be oversold. But this is not always the case and it’s important to know upfront so your salesperson can stay within the range of options that suit your budget.
Remember these questions the next time you are shopping for wine. Not all salespeople are there to upsell you and a lot of the time, if you don’t ask for what you want, you won’t get it. Be open to hearing what they have to say but also be confident in what you know you like and you’ll find a good common ground and you might even find a new favorite wine!
