03 Feb Why We Decant Wine
Do you have a decanter or have you been wondering if you should get one? Why do you need to decant your wine, you might ask? To decant your wine simply means to pour from one vessel into another. Here are some reasons why you might want to do this.
Decanting your wine allows it to come into contact more with oxygen. During the initial contact with the wine, this can be beneficial, softening the wine and enhancing its flavor. It rounds out the wine and makes it more pleasing to people’s taste buds.
You should pour your wine into your decanter 15-20 minutes before you wish to serve it. Simply let it sit for that period of time. Doing so separates the wine from the sediment, which wouldn’t look nice in your glass but also causes a more astringent taste. Decanting the wine slowly ensures sediment stays in the bottle.
Some white wines can even benefit from being decanted. Higher-end wines that can age will benefit as decanting helps the wine to open up. Most everyday young whites don’t need decanting, however.
A clear crystal decanter will allow you to see the wine at its best. While decanting is useful for many reasons, it is also a visual pleasure to have on your table. Ensure you rinse your decanter with mineral water to remove any odors and make sure it is spot-free. You should also never clean your decanter with detergent, as the shape of a decanter can make it difficult to remove all of the soapy residues. You can use crushed ice and coarse salt to remove residual wine without the worry of any lingering aromas. We also offer a Spot-Not decanter drier and polisher that will make it so easy to clean the inside of almost any shaped decanter you need to clean.
So just remember, decanting wine doesn’t have to be difficult or intimidating, and having a beautiful decanter on the table only highlights your favorite wines more.
